A simulation of the artist’s hand holds a magnifying glass which concentrates the virtual sun’s rays into one pure white spot on a road reproduced from Guantánamo, Cuba. The hand picks up the lens from the ground at dawn each day and holds it all day until dusk. At the end of the day. the lens is returned to the ground and the hand exits. At the beginning and end of each day, when the sun is at a oblique angle, the spot takes on a distorted, almost comet like appearance, while at midday it is at its most concentrated point. The works unfolds in this way, dawn until dusk each day for a full 365 day year.

Marking Time explored the ways in which artists visualise time and its passing, across diverse media – drawing and watercolour, sculpture and installation, sound and light. An international exhibition selected by MCA Senior Curator Rachel Kent, Marking Time presented major works by eleven artists from Australia, Brazil, Ireland, Italy, Japan, and the United States in the Museum’s spacious new top floor galleries.
