Daylight Fan (Orbital Camera) , 2009
'Daylight Fan (Orbital Camera)' is a new, small-scale virtual sculpture. In it a silver fan is placed on the floor of an elegant white room. Programmed to run only during the hours of daylight, the fan’s movement is captured by a camera which orbits slowly around it. A complete 360 degree revolution takes a full 24 hours, corresponding to the speed of the earth’s turn. Thus one sees the fan face on each day at midday, before it begins its slow turn over the next full day and night. Unlike earlier works the ability to manipulate and look around the virtual scene is absent. In Daylight Fan one must wait, patiently, to witness the work’s full unfolding.
The piece has a curiously meditative quality, reminiscent of the artist’s recent oil pump works. Its simplicity masks a complex mediation on power, energy, exchange and sustainability. (JS)
All proceeds from the work will go towards supporting the artist’s participation at the 2009 Venice Biennale.
